How To Help a Small Business (without buying a thing!)

Helen Turner

Shopping locally and from small businesses is a topic that seems to be discussed more and more these days. Whilst it’s amazing to support independent shops and services, you might not always be in a position to spend with them so here are some top tips for alternative ways to show your support:

  1. Social Media - if you follow businesses on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or other social media platforms, give their posts a like, comment or a share (or all 3!). It helps spread the word which, for a small business, is so important.

  2. Word of Mouth - if you’ve bought something from a small business or received fab customer service then shout about it! Recommend them to your friends and family.

  3. Lend Some Moral Support - it can be really tough running your own business so check in with the stores on your local high street, see how they’re doing and what they’re up to. Friendly faces are always welcome, even if you’re not buying anything that day!

  4. Don’t Ask For Mates Rates or Freebies - profit margins for small businesses can be really tight and, whilst in an ideal world, they’d be able to give freebies, charitable donations and discounts regularly, it’s just not always possible. Equally, if a small business is offering a discount or donation, know that it’s a big deal for them to do so!

  5. When You Can Buy From Them, Do! - every single sale is important to an independent business, no matter how small. Not only does it help to pay the bills, it’s also a big confidence boost to know that customers love what they are doing!

Upcoming Trends for 2019

Helen Turner

It’s the time of year again when the trade shows are in full swing - we love going to them to discover new brands and source exciting new products that we think you’ll love. Each year, experts in the gift industry make their predictions for which trends are going to emerge and these are the big ones for 2019!

  1. British Handmade Goods

We’re so happy to see this trend appearing this year, as we love to champion local makers here at Not Socks Again. We’re really proud to stock so many products that are designed here in South Wales and we always look to buy from other small businesses in the UK whenever we can.

  2. Mindfulness and Wellbeing

Self care has been discussed more and more in recent years, especially as we seem to be living with more uncertainty which can take a toll on our mental health. One of our favourite products that we stock in this category are I Can Cards - positive affirmation cards covering a range of topics such as self love, depression and anxiety. They were a complete sell out just before Christmas and we’re looking forward to stocking up on them ready for our reopening. We’ll also be introducing the new I Can Children’s Cards to our product range.

  3. Personalisation

This seems to be a trend that is here to stay as the personalised gifts market just keeps growing and growing! We’ve got some exciting plans in the pipeline in this area so watch this space!!

  4. Sustainability

The UK continues to be determined to do the right thing in terms of environmental issues and this is leading to an increased demand for reusable and repurposed products. We have a great range of reusable mugs, water bottles and shopping bags, including Shop Penarth products.

For more details on the Shop Penarth scheme, visit www.shoppenarth.co.uk.

It also looks like some of last year’s trends are sticking around this year - cactus, tropical and panda designs seem here to stay for now!

We can’t wait to launch all of our new product lines for Spring/Summer 2019 - check them out online and in store from late February.
